Interesting Ulysses S. Grant Facts
Ulysses S. Grant was born with the name
Hiram Ulysses Grant but he was often called Ulysses or Lyss.
When he was nominated for the U.S. Military Academy, he was
mistakenly nominated as Ulysses Simpson Grant (Simpson was his
mothers maiden name). When Grant graduated, he decided to
keep the new form of his name using only the middle initial
S.
Grant was not a heavy cigar smoker until a
reporter saw hime holding an unlit cigar during the Battle of
Fort Donelson. Soon after, thousands of cigars were sent
to him in camp. He gave away as many as he could but
started the habit of cigar smoking that became his
trademark.
On the day of Lincoln's assassination, Grant
and his wife were invited to the play but Grant declined.
If Grant had accepted, he might also have become a victim....
or if he had seen Booth before the gun was fired, he might have
prevented the first assassination of a president in American
history.
